Kitchen Tips
Use a vegetable peeler instead of a knife for finely slicing
fennel – you’ll get lovely uneven paper thin shaved pieces..
Sharpen your kitchen scissors: fold a piece of aluminium foil up
four times, cut through with the scissors half a dozen times.
If your wooden chopping board has splits or cracks, throw it
out. Harmful bacteria gets in the cracks and it is no longer safe
to use for food preparation..
A few drops of lemon juice added to simmering rice will keep
the grains separate.
A lump of butter or a few teaspoons of cooking oil added to
water when boiling rice, noodles, macaroni, or spaghetti will
prevent boiling over.
Choosing eggs ... fresh eggs' shells are rough and chalky; old
eggs are smooth and shiny.
Store chopped vegetables in airtight plastic containers in the
fridge to keep from browning and drying up.

Use non-stick utensils. Use thick bottom utensils. They get
uniformly heated. For electric stoves, use flat bottom utensils.

Don`t discard the water in which the vegetables are soaked or
cooked. Use it in making soup or gravy.

If you drop an egg on the floor, cover it with salt and let it
remain like this for a couple of minutes. You will be able to
easily clean the mess with a paper towel.

A handful of salt added to the rinsing water for glass and
crockery will not only make them cleaner but sparkling clear.

To prevent chopped brinjals from getting discoloured keep
them in salted water, till required.

To refresh old laddoos, heat them in a microwave for thirty
seconds. The laddoos will taste as good and fresh.

To make Aluminum vessels look good again, rub them
with emery paper. Mere washing can't remove the black
stains.
If an onion is too sharp in taste, wash, drain and toss
into some beaten curd. Add a dash of salt and pepper,
it becomes a tasty raitha.
To bake potatoes crisp and brown, soak the peeled
potatoes in hot water for a while, pat dry and pierce all
over with a fork before placing them in hot fat along with
the roast.
If dried herbs are used in a recipe, crush them first to
release their fragrance.
Save the peel of apples, cucumbers and peaches.
Grind them and add to the ingredients of a green
chutney (coriander leaves, green chillies, ginger,
coconut, salt and sugar). It makes a tasty and nutritious
chutney and when mixed with curd makes an unusual
raita.
To remove mud stains from clothes, soak and wash
them in water collected after boiling potatoes

Apply mashed banana over a burn on your body for
cooling effect.

Hang a peacock feather, lizards will leave your house.

To keep paneer fresh for several days, wrap it in a
blotting paper while storing in the refrigerator.

To bake potatoes quickly, place them in salt water
for 15 minutes before baking. Use the skin of boiled
potatoes to wipe mirrors to sparkling clean.

If the yogurt has become sour, put it in a muslin cloth
and drain all the water. Then add milk to make it as
good as fresh in taste. Use the drained water in
making tasty gravy for vegetables or for basen curry.

To get the full flavor out of saffron, warm it slightly
before crushing (you may do so in a microwave oven
for ten seconds on HIGH), add one teaspoon of warm
milk and stir well.
